So I left Washington DC and headed to Mount Vernon which is about 30 minutes south and is the mansion where George Washington lived. I took a tour around this place and the surrounding area and then decided to drive south to head to Colonial Williamsburg, this should of only taken about 2 or 3 hours but yet again I got stuck in traffic and managed to head to Williamsburg about 5 where I pulled into my first motel stay, it was actually quite nice, though I did double both the door.
I decided that before the sun set, which is quite early now, which really cuts my sightseeing times down, I headed into the historical part of Williamsburg and it was like a blast to the past. No cars were allowed there and all the buildings were from colonial times, 1700's onwards and the people were dressed in colonial clothes, in shops and restaurants all set in that period. I watched a marching band go down the street, it was awesome.
I wandered around and decided to head back when it got really dark as they didn't have any street lights. The next day I headed back into the town where they had a street market and went to the popular cheese shop to pick up some food to keep me going for the day while looking at all the horse and carriages and people all dressed up.
I then headed to Yorktown afterwards which was just down the road and is part of the National Park of all the historical parts round here. This is where there was a battle against the British were we ended up surrendering, which they were very proud about and the tour of the battlefield was about how the British messed up. As you can imagine I kept very quiet about the fact that I was British as everyone else was from the US!
Virginia is beautiful, all the trees are brown, the weather is mild and it's been lovely driving around. Wish I could venture further into Virginia but need to still head south and North Carolina is the next stop, the Outer Banks here I come.
