So again I took the scenic route from Portland to Boston, the drive via the interstate should have taken 2 hours but I went the nicer route and took me about 4 and half hours. Stayed in a hostel on the outskirts of Boston, so that I could have parking and not have to worry about driving through the city. I decided to take the rest of the day off and I finally changed my clothes!
So I was in a 6 person female dorm and spent the first 2 nights in this dorm alone! No one really in the hostel except a few strange older men who seemed to actually live there. The room walls were so thin that I could hear the men next door snoring and one of them had this terrible hacking cough which scared the hell out of me the first time I heard it and it went on all night, to the point where I think it made him sick!!!! Also the mattresses were plastic and it didn't matter what I did, the sheet just wouldn't stay on the bed, every time I rolled over in the night it would come sliding off and I would find myself stuck to the mattress!!! However, it was a good hostel and nice to get some space to myself.
So the next day I headed into the city and hit the freedom trail, but got distracted by the new state house which did a free tour, I know I'm not at work but I do find all these political buildings interesting and despite the fact that the US are very proud of being independent from Great Britain after fighting for their independence, they still seem to keep their political buildings to look a lot like parliament! Ok boring stuff over! So I decided to go on a guided tour of the freedom trail tour which involved a young man dressed up in old colonial clothes, it was great and I met a lovely lady from Georgia who gave me her contact details in case I needed to stay when I made my way down there. I then head for the final part of the freedom trail on my own and up to Bunker hill Monument.
I then decided while I was in the city to head to the cinema to watch Thor 2. So by the time I headed out it was quite late and I caught the metro home. So the hostel runs a shuttle service to the metro station, I had got a lift in the morning and the lady told me to just call when I wanted picking up, but I didn't have a phone and I decided to walk, knowing that the walk wasn't far. I however, got very lost, I found myself on the wrong side of the river and had to walk miles to get back to the right side and took me an hour in the end, when should have been 10 minutes, I'm still not sure how I even found the hostel in the end!!
Next day back into Boston but went to Harvard University for a free tour of the ground by one of the students. Massive place in a lovely part of Boston and I'm pleased to say that I have been to Harvard now, even if it was only for a tour! I then decided to try one of the restaurants recommended on that man vs food programme. No food challenge in this place but awesome seafood, the place called barking crab if anyone remembers the Boston show. I then just walked around the city for a bit more before heading back to the hostel on the metro and walked the right way back to hostel this time.
Boston was a beautiful city with so much to do, I would recommended this place to everyone and would come back to visit anytime, was a really lovely place with some great people.
I am becoming a pro at eating out alone and going to the movies on my todd (no different from back home, as my friends know, I went to the cinema on my own quite a bit then) and I quite enjoy it, especially in restaurants, the waiters and waitresses feel slightly sorry for you and make so much more of an effort which is great for me. The guy in the seafood place thought I was hilarious trying to eat my massive crab legs and not knowing what I was doing as I was spraying myself in crab so much, but all adds to the experience. People are always so surprised that I am travelling on my own and it makes it easier to meet other people when I'm on my own. So it's all going well and I'm off to Philadelphia for more adventures!
