So leaving the UK for good was a weird concept, it's the first time I had to use all my pounds as I knew I wouldn't be seeing them again for a while!
So the first weird thing about Iceland in the summer is that the sun never sets, I arrived at 1:30am and it was sunny, a lot colder than the UK but the sun was still in the sky which makes going to the loo in the middle of the night really easy!
So on the first day there I met up with Ad and Sue from the college, it was their last day in Iceland and we went whale watching, it was brilliant. I was a bit nervous and still sad after saying goodbye to everyone so was brilliant to spend my first morning with familiar and friendly faces. We set off at 10 and we saw puffins that are rubbish at flying, dolphins that were jumping and playing around our boat and finally a minky whale (I know, minky, tee hee)! It was such a great start to the travels and then the lovely ladies bought me lunch before catching their flight, thank you so much, it was a great way to get settled in and they can vouch that they saw me alive and well at the beginning of my travels.
I went to the Blue Lagoon the next day and the beauty of Iceland is that all the water is naturally warm, no energy is spent warming anything up due to the geothermals, so it was nice to swim around in this mineral rich water and chill out. After wards I took a tour of the Golden Circle, went to Pingvellir National Park to see the tectonic plates and where they are drifitng apart and went into the rift zone, the bit inbetween the plates. Went to Gullfoss waterfall and then witnessed geyers shooting up boiling water in Strokkur.
That evening I made friends with the people in my room, which resulted in a lot of vodka drinking, playing cards and then dancing till 5 in the morning, and it was still light!!
The next day was an easy day of swimming in the local pool and going in the hot baths, all naturally heated again. Went for dinner and tried some shark and dried fish which is a popular dish in Iceland, which I was not a fan of as it was sooooo dry that you had to lube it up with butter!! Again the night ended in drinking, cards and dancing!!
Iceland was fantastic and would love to come back and visit more of the island, but it's so expensive, as in ridiculously so, so will have to be a venture for another time when I have loads of cash to blow on all the activities that you can do.
