We left Bangkok on Wednesday after another hearty breakfast from our hotel. We have honestly underestimated how much we have missed toast over the past couple of months.
The hotel booked us a taxi to the northern bus terminal in Bangkok and we left at half 8 and made our way through the rush hour traffic. Once again the driving was mental with the driver having no concept of lanes and constantly weaving in and out of the traffic. The taxi only cost us about £3 and considering it took us about 40 minutes we thought it was a pretty good deal. Once at the bus station, we booked our bus up to the northern town of Sukothai where we planned on staying until Friday. The bus left at 10 but not without Beth whacking her head off the compartment above the seat while we were swapping seats so I could sit next to the window. Naturally this was my fault and I think I'm still in the bad books for it!! The bus ride was good and we got into Sukothai at about half 4 so it was a 6 and a half hour journey in total. As soon as we got off the bus, we were 'helped' by a woman to sort out our bus to Chang Mai on Friday and to our taxi to our hostel. To be fair she did actually help us but we have found that whenever you arrive somewhere in Thailand you are immediately accosted by loads of people. This naturally makes you suspicious and cynical but you feel like you have to be wary or people will try to rip you off.
Anyway, we got to our hostel, EZ Guesthouse, which is pretty good and really cheap as its only £8 a night between us. Once we had sorted our stuff out, we had a walk into Sukothai new city which isn't too impressive and stopped for something to eat at a restaurant. Again, the prices here are so cheap that we spent £3 on a meal
each and a big bottle of water. A large beer is £1.50 and as its so cheap I might have to sink a few tonight! We just had a quiet night and caught up with stuff in the hostel and had an early night as we wanted to be up relatively early in the morning to visit the ancient city for which Sukothai is famous.
After snoozing our alarm for an hour, we eventually got up at half 8 and got ready to visit the ancient city. We caught the 'bus' from near the 7/11 shop which took us the 12km to the ancient city. Once we got off, we rented a bike each and bought tickets for the central zone of the city and went exploring. The ruins of the temples were fascinating and we really enjoyed cycling around looking at them. We did only visit the central zone as you had to pay to enter each zone although it was only 100 baht each (£2) to visit each zone. It was really hot again though so we constantly found ourselves seeking shade an a shop from where we could down a bottle of water. After about 2 hours of exploring, we gave the bikes back and went for some lunch. If you were visiting all of the zones then you could spend at least a day looking around but half a day is probably enough or the central zone.
As we are quickly becoming obsessed with the food over here (it's all I seem to write about), I had another Pad Thai which was great again, while Beth had an American breakfast with some ropey looking ham (she reckons it was nice), an egg, some fruit, toast, tea and orange juice. I think she just went for the dish with the most items!!
Tonight we will head out for some food and a couple of beers before we get a bus to Chang Mai at 10.30 in the morning.
