Our Friday night in Georgetown was spent at the Esplanade where they were having a celebration for the last night of the Chinese New Year festivities which also coincided with Valentines Day. There was a stage with some music and dancing in an loads of stalls selling cheap street food. We had some spring rolls, potato cakes and chicken satay sticks which were all great then had a sit on the grass and watched some different singing and dancing which we both enjoyed. There were lots of people crowded around the waterfront so we went to have a look an found a lot of women trying to throw oranges into buckets which were places in the water. We found out that this is a tradition where if the orange gets into the bucket then the woman will find her soul mate. Beth was desperate to have a go to find her soul mate but I wouldn't let her so I guess she is stuck with me!!
On Saturday, we again walked down towards the sea front but this time visited the Penang State museum which was just 1 ringgit to get into. We had a good look around for an hour and there was a lot in here about the history of the island where Britain had a significant presence until the Second World War. After this we had a look at a couple of church's before we ventured to little India where we wanted to get some lunch. As soon as we were in the area, we could immediately notice the difference from the rest of Georgetown with the sights and smells. We grabbed a samosa each from a street stall for 1 ringgit each (less than 20p each) and they were both amazing. We then shared a sort of potato ball thing which was quite sweet. Beth didnt really like it but I did which is surprising as she is normally the sweets person. We then decided to get a naan bread each which again were fantastic while Beth also got a mango lassy, a drink, which she loved. All of this was bought for about £2 so I was over the moon.
On Saturday night we ventured out in search of a food court which I had read about in the lonely planet book. After we got lost once (my fault), we eventually found it only to find that it was shut for the night. Beth didnt seem happy with me about this but I explained that I didn't make the opening times for the food court and she sort of accepted it. We decided to go back to the food court which we had eaten at on Friday afternoon which was in the First Avenue mall. So we walked another 20 minutes an got to the food court where we both had fried rice (me beef and Beth crab) which was exactly what we had previously. We then decided to go back to the room to watch a movie as we were both a bit tired with the heat.
So today is actually my birthday so we had bought a small chocolate cake last night and had a little bit each but were going to have the rest for breakfast. Excitedly, Beth opened the box and cut the cake with a spoon (we don't have knives in the room) and handed me a piece before she almost cried and said "there's ants in the cake". Sure enough there were a load of ants in the cake box and on the cake so we had to bin the cake and get rid of all the ants on our bed. We were both a bit gutted but we noticed that there wasn't a trail of ants anyway so they must have been confined to the box and they must have been on the cake when we ate it last night. Beth assures me that our stomach acids will have killed them but I've told her that ant infested chocolate cake isn't the best present I've ever had. After that bombshell, we left the room and went to visit Kek Lok Si Temple which is about half an hour out of town on a public bus. It was really easy to get to and you can't miss the temple when your near as it dominates the town of Air Itam which it is near. The temple is really impressive and we would really recommend to go if you are in Penang. It's really peaceful after you get through the numerous shops and stalls selling things and the decoration within the prayer halls is amazing. We had a good look around or a couple of hours but as we were at the top and viewing the huge bronze statue of a goddess, our camera died. We did manage to get one photo of her at the top but that was it.
So we headed back to town, grabbed some lunch and water and are now back in the room before we go out tonight. We've decided to go back to little India for some food then head to a bar for a couple of drinks. Not too different to what we would probably do at home minus the family and cold temperatures!
