Day 2 in Rio and we were awoken at 8.30 by one of our Argentinian roommates shouting about something. Through our very, very limited knowledge of Spanish, we gathered that he had apparently misplaced his shorts. We thought it was quite funny at first until he seemed to find another level of rage and decided to spit in the bin. I think the moral the story is to never steal an Argentinian's shorts!!!
Anyway, after getting ready and having breakfast, we had to make the 10 minute journey to our next hostel by foot. Unfortunately, due to us both having packed a ridiculous amount of stuff, this was difficult in the 30 degree heat!! We eventually made it to our next hostel, Mellow Yellow, and it immediately had a good feel for Beth as we could share bunk beds.
After settling in, we made the 5 minute walk to Copacabana beach and spent the afternoon on the beach trying to tan out pasty bodies and people watching. The beach is a brilliant place, with people going up and down the beach trying to sell everything from biscuits to beer to towels. Due to budget restrictions, Beth was unable to purchase anything!!
On the night time we decided o go out for some food and went to a traditional Brazilian 'pay for what you eat' buffet restaurant. Here, you put what you want on a plate and take it to the counter where they weigh it and you get charged a certain amount per kilo. However, we were advised by the hostel owner to pay the full amount for the buffet as she said that it is a scam as you the scales have not been calibrated to take into account the correct weight of the plates. Anyways, it was nice.
After the food, we went back to the hostel bar where it was happy hour and we could et 4 beers for 10 reals (about £2.50). We took advantage but Beth decided that she didn't like her second taste of the local brew. We were given free vouchers for the traditional local drink, calaprinhas (probably not the right spelling), so Beth took advantage of these. She decided that she liked them but they do contain quite a few limes so she made a pretty weird screwed up face after the sourness of her first drink. We had a good night and met some canny English and Norwegian people sitting around the bar.
We have just checked out of the hostel, after another reduced sleep night thanks to some English girl shouting her head off at half 3 in the morning. We fly to Foz du Iguassu tonight and will be there for the next 3 nights.
We both hope everyone is okay back at home.
