On our final day in Rio we checked out of our hostel at 12 and didn't fly until 10 at night.
We went for a walk along the beach for the final time and had a cold drink at one of the numerous beach bars. The weather was great again so we have been pretty lucky so far.
As we headed back to the hostel, we saw a group of people dressed in suits who looked completely out of place with all the shorts, t-shirts and thong wearing locals. As we got closer we noticed that they looked like bodyguards out of films so we decided to have closer look. We hoped to see someone famous such as Alicia Keys or Beyonce given that Rock in Rio was happening this weekend, however, we found that it was some old man in some kind of military uniform. In all honesty, I thought that it was Robert Mugabe on some kind of foreign visit but Beth seemed keen to meet him and started waving vigorously at him. He caught her eye and waved her over for photo which she wasn't going to turn down. Anyway we still haven't identified this mystery man and whether he was an African dictator on holiday or some local military man.
We returned to the hostel and the two English lads we met on our previous night were flying home. We decided to jump in their taxi to save some money but this would mean a 6 hour wait in the airport before our flight.
There were no problems on the flight; Beth particularly enjoyed it since she fell asleep as soon as she put we seat belt on and I had to wake her up to get off the plane when we had landed.
Today (Saturday), we have walked around the town and found that there isn't really a great deal to do. There are a Subway, McDonalds and Pizza Hit but I've managed to convince Beth that these are even out of our budget range at the moment. We have bought some food from the supermarket and plan to make pasta in the hostel kitchen tonight with a few beers from the hostel bar. It is absolutely boiling her today - the phone says 35 degrees but I can't remember being many places hotter than this.
Favela Chic hostel where we are now staying seems really chilled out with hammocks and places to lounge around. Definately my kind of place. The people staying here seem really friendly as well so hopefully our next few days will be good.
We plan to visit the Brazilian side of the waterfall tomorrow so we should have some more interesting pics than today's pitiful entries.
Get in Ben Arfa!!!!!!!!
