Day 4: So today we took a tour of one of the developing communities in Stockholm known as Stockholm Royal Seaport. Our trip to get there was a bumpy one, with a struggle to get tickets for the train. But once we reached the area known as Norra Djurgardsstaden, we were able to see how this area was becoming a sustainable community. Our tour was led by architect and urban planner Stefan, and he showed us around the developed and developing areas of the community.'
It was amazing. I was speechless.
We were able to see the office of all the projects that this community was undergoing - and able to see what sustainability meant to them. It was awesome to see models and their studio space. Stefan led a presentation and showed us more about his work as well as his work with other city planners and developers . Because this land was owned by the city, city planners and developers came to build a community from the ground up, so it was really interesting to see that happening.
Our tour continued, and we were able to see the gas work towers that were present in the area. We also saw the residential area and waste treatment facilities, which were really impressive that involved underground piping to sort trash. This tour was great to see how sustainable a city can be when building one from the ground up, and changes in the built environment (like high dense areas with mixed use land) can become really sustainable for our planet.
This tour, however, was super long and drained me that I went back to our hotel. I stopped by the grocery store and bought some food to make, made it at the hotel and rested before our class at 5. Luckily our professor didn't make us walk to our classroom and just had lecture in the kitchen area. After class, a few of us went to the beach and just chilled there for a while before hitting up the bar to watch the Brazil and Germany game. We walked back to the bar we went Saturday night and ended up watching a pretty sad game. Germany was killing Brazil, and even though I was rooting for Brazil, I still had a great time out with friends. After a beer and a shot of tequila, it was time to call it a night. But the night couldn't be complete until after some McDonalds fries, which me and my friend Brittany went to go buy. We came back to our hotel, and I got ready for bed and awaited the adventures that laid ahead the next morning.
