Kate in Madrid
Today was the lovely ride to Valencia. We saw the train station, Cathedral and. . .big news. . .my friend Nicole and I got married yay felicidades!
Okay so in this Cathedral, legend has it is THE holy grail. But I got to thinking about this. This grail, as all legend describes it, is described as pretty gaudy and jewel-bedecked, right? Let's stop a minute to consider. First of all - Jesus was a carpenter. Not much money for a cup made of diamonds, right? The house he had the last supper in was not likely to have such chalices either (unless it was a king's, maybe. . .? err). He probably really just had like a wooden or stone cup, wouldn't you think?
Then we went to the market, and these are the things that must be remembered: dried fruit, massacred chickens, ducks, and rabbits, ostrich eggs, and a vending machine that vends beer.
After the market we went to the AQUARIUM!!! YAY!! And I was reminded of my dreams of being a dolphin trainer. I should still do it. Next to the aquarium was a science museum where we could watch chicks hatch just like in first grade! It was basically like a gigantic children's museum but for adults. The photo is one of the buildings of the museum.
Today was also my first taste of paella!! It was delicious. . .a little difficult to figure out how to eat the shrimp, though.
And that reminds me, our guide, Fernando, who came with us for the weekend is one of the coolest guys ever! He works at the Prado museum. He writes most of the scripts for audio guides not only at the Prado but other places like the Alhambra!
Anyway, then a few of us just hung out in one of the hotel rooms until 2 am, having a competition of shooting tiny balls of paper into water glasses and trying to figure out how to open the mini-bar (P.S. - still haven't had anything to drink). My team won the competition, hands down.
