Lynda and Fred Travels
Well a quick breakfast...our last meal on the ship. Then we said our goodbyes to Lyn and Stan and took a tour of Montreal which ended up at the airport. Very convenient! Montreal is a port city built on the St Lawrence river. Actually only cruise ships can get right into old Montreal..all other ships dock way further down the river. the river is very dangerous for ships...lots of rocks, rapids, currents and very shallow in places! In 1825 they built a canal to bypass the rapids. Montreal was the 3rd city to be created in this country with Quebec number one and Trois Rivers Number 2. Today it is the second largest city in Canada behind Toronto. I Montreal was founded in 1642 by Frenchman Maison Neuve...he was instrumental in bringing the catholic religion to the natives...an edict sent to him by king of France! The French actually occupied much more than Quebec in that time but all of the Mississippi River from New Orleans to St Louis. Montreal of course is an island. They are proud of the fact they have lots of parks, water features, and tree lined streets! In the early days the native tribes came on canoes and main industry was trading furs...very profitable business...the reason the British were so interested in this area. They are proud of the fact that Quebec and New Brunswick are not bilingual. Their signs are only in French..even street signs. Montreal is the 2nd biggest French speaking city behind Paris. We went to Mount Royal Park, a huge hill overlooking Montreal...beautiful park land with cycle paths, lakes, ball parks, etc. In 1967 Montreal hosted Expo 67 when 50 million people visited this city. The USA iconic round building was donated to Montreal and is now Bioshere dedicated to conservation study. Molson is an icon in Montreal...not only for beer but they used to be a bank and still are owners of the Canadian Hockey team. The first bridge to the island was built in 1860 for railways but now there are 20 vehicle bridges. Due to the cold in winter and heat in summer they have 33 km of underground passenger tunnels in the city. After our tour we found our airport hotel...had lunch...I went to gym and swim....early dinner which was delicious and bed early for long trip tomorrow to Hawaii.
