Ive been in Uganda now for 11 days, not had a chance to get online yet so here is the latest!
Arrived in Kampala a week and a half ago after a very long bus ride! Checked into the backpackers and then had a look around the citywith my friend Louise who I travelled across with.
We went to some tombs of ancient kings which were pretty interesting. The descendantsof the kings' many wives still live in the houses by the tombs incase the current king of Buganda (western region of Uganda) returns and they will then have to resume the traditional rituals of caring for him! There is also a drum at the entrance ready to be played.
We also went to the local markets which were good and full of souvenirs! The best way to get around here is to get a ride on a boda (motorbike). Its a pretty scary experience slipping through the traffic expecially as they dont wear helmets here but im getting used to it!
Went out to a bar on the saturday night with other people from the hostel. Very good night life here and it was an experience getting home when the texi driver said he could fit all 8 of us in one car! but not to roll the windows down incase of police!
I got the early morning shuttle on the sunday to get to jinja which is where my volunteering is.
The place im staying is called Bujigali fall,s names after the rapids on the nile close by. Its beautiful here! Ive done a week of volunteering with soft power so far which has been great. Ive done some painting in the local primary school and have helped sort out the library in the education centre they have. This week im going to start work on creating a map for Soft power showing the local area and where each project has taken place. I figure im pretty well suited to that, being a geographer and future planner!
There are loads of great projects going on here and loads to do besides volunteering. I went rafting on the nile on sunday down some grade 5 rapids which was so much fun! You get thrown around so much!
Im going Gorilla trekking at the weekend in western uganda. its very expensive as you have to buy a permit for the park but i don't know if ill get another chance to go and everyone ive spoken to says its worth it so im gona go for it! Its going to be a long 12 hour drive there on friday and back on sunday though!
Only two weeks left in africa, I will be sad to go! But i'm sure Ill have just as much fun in south america!
