We arrived in Puno, Peru early evening on Tuesday.Puno is also on the edge of Lake Titicaca but on the Peruvian side. When we arrived we sought out an agency to do a tour of the floating islands which Lake Titicaca is famous for.Sarah decided not to come as she wanted to spend a day resting so Beth and I booked a tour for the next day.
We were picked up at 6.45am on Wednesday morning and taken to the port where we got on a boat to the Uros floating islands. There are 42 artificial floating islands made completely out of reeds. The people that live on the islands rely on fish in the river and go around in reed boats! We visited two of the islands and were shown how they were constructed and also had a demonstration by four women on market trading. It was interesting seeing the role play and how everything is traded rather than brought and often people will run off with extra at the end if they think their product deserves more! After this we had a little trip in a reed boat and then set off for island Taquile which is one of the natural islands in the lake.
After two hours we arrived at Taquile. We walked up to the main plaza and enjoyed the amazing views of the lake and the island. We then had lunch (fish again) and descended the 500 steps back down to the port where our boat was waiting. It was then a three hour boat ride back to Puno.It was really sunny and hot so we were able to sunbathe on the top of the boat. When we got back we went out for dinner and some drinks before heading back to our hostel.
