Date: 16th August 2011
Place: Katherine
Weather: Sunny and hot!
Didn't feel too bad after having slept through completely. There wasn't too long to wait until we got into Katherine when we would have a couple of hours break looking around the town.
When I got onto the city shuttle Nicole and Charlotte (the girls I swapped seats with) were on there and we started talking the normal travel talk. They said I could stick with them because none of us knew what there was to do there. We decided to head to McDonalds first to get a bit of breakfast and because I needed to use the internet. Annoyingly it didn't work though.
Katherine is a very small place and only has one set of traffic lights which we actually used twice! It is made up of the one main street with a few little bits just off that. We decided to go for a walk up and down both sides of the street and have a look in any of the little shops that looked interesting. We only went in one.
We did have the options of doing tours like Kayaking in the gorge or a helicopter ride but they were all just way to expensive. It cost me $15 just to get the bus into town! The time thankfully dwindled down; after just 2 hours we were ready to leave and sat waiting at the bus stop for a while.
The train journey wasn't too long then; only about 5 hours. We got to Darwin at 5.30pm and got all our bags and onto the city shuttle to Darwin. I was pretty lucky and got a voucher in a magazine for a hostel in Darwin for $5 off for the first night. Darwin hostels are all soooo expensive and you don't really get anything extra with them.
In my room I met a girl who was trying to find a way to leave asap because she had been there too long. She seemed a bit stuck up though and didn't really want to socialise all that much so I was sooo thankful when Romy and Sophie showed up and invited me out with them for that night. They were both German again, I think Ive come to Germany by accident instead of Australia.
They shared their wine with me which was sweet and then we head down to the underground where we got free 'champagne' because it was a special offer when you went in. We just kept going in and out so we kept getting another free drink. After sitting down there for a little while we had over to Monsoons where a guy bought us all a drink and we had a little dance. It wasn't too great in there though so we had back to Underground. In there we got another free 'Champagne' and then danced for the rest of the night until this guy started dancing in a really weird way around me and wouldn't leave me alone! So I left.

Gran Shame you were able to see so little of Katherine... the surrounds really. The Gorge is "GORGEous"; we saw the kayakers there.
