I think if I was in only a slightly deaper sleep I would have slept through my alarm. A 5.30 wake up call is never nice and I was a dead girl walking for a while. After checking out I wanted to quickly run up to grab a bit of breakfast which started at 6am just before my bus at 6.10am. Luckily enough for me the guy who normally sorts out breakfast was late so there was no breakfast ready which meant no wake up coffee!!!
There was already a lot of people waiting at the bus stop when I got there, I think this wa a popular day to leave on this trip as it is the first after New Year. I knew two people on the bus, Shaun and Nicky, but it turned out there was two seperate coaches because it was so busy and luckily enough they were on the other coach to me. We had to go and sign in at the Oz Experience Office and I was given my ticket for the coach journey up to Cairns.
The first part of the journey was only and hour and a half but I slept the whole way. We stopped off to get breakfast where I finally had a coffee and also had a bacon and egg toasty. Yes not the healthiest of things but its not tooo bad! I found some people from my bus and asked if I could join them; they are called Lisa and Ellie, I think "/ . Im awful with names. After that it was a 2 hour trip to the next toilet break so I had a good sort out of my timetable up the east coast.
I had worked it all out so that it fit properly by the time we got to the next stop but then I was given a new timetable as from the 15th January so I had to do it all over again on. It didnt change much really which is nice and I also managed to sort out which boat Im going to go on on the Whitsundays! It's called the Atlantic Clipper and looks absolutely amazing! It has a slide and hottub onboard and we go diving and bush walking :). Im very excited.
We stopped for lunch in a little town where there was a subway thankfully so I had another salad. I do like them because it only costs me $6 and is actually healthy! Lisa and Ellie came with me whilst I got it but waited outside as they were going to go to Woolworths over the road to get soemthing. I do love the laid back Aussie style but it does mean that they cant do Subway like England. They are so slow in there and there was a huge queue and trust me to be behind a woman who was ordering for a bus load of people! I told the girls to go over the road and I would find them.
When I had finally got it and found the at the checkout in Woolworths we walked back to the bus where everyone was sitting in some shade next to it. It was a very hot day!! This was the first time I spoke to everyone really, not that I could talk a lot when I had a mouthful of salad! We got back on the bus and began the rest of the journey during which we saw a giant banana - one of many big things in Australia apparently - and stopped off at a bottle shop since there isnt one in Spot X.
When we arrived there the night manager Dan greeted us who was a typical surfer. He checked us in and gave us an introduction and tour. Then it was time for dinner where we had a full on feast of a buffer complete with apple crumble and custard!!!! yummy! The guys then decided they wanted to go for a swim in the sea but we just fancied a paddle. It turned out to be really warm water which was nice; apparently around 25degrees. I had a bit of an explore after that with 2 girls from London who actually said I could have joined them up the whole of the east coast; it's just such a shame Im on such a tight time scale but they are fairly similar so we are going to do a lot of things together. They may even see if they can do the same Whitsundays and Fraser Island tours as me which would be amazing!
We had a lovely introduction then with me getting my bum in their faces!! Well it wasnt quite as bad as that, they were wrapping up my blisters on my leg so that it would stop sticking to my trousers. But what a way to introduce myself; trousers down infront of them before we even exchanged names! We said afterwards we will be best friends forever now!!
Later on that night we took another trip to the beach because Disco the tour guide had said that there was some sort of plancton that glows if you kick the water. It actually worked; they look like little blue electric sparks it was amazing. And the stars that night were incredible. As we were so far away from any cities it was so clear, I have never seen so many in my life. We went to sleep that night at about 10.30pm ready for our 6am wake up call for our 7am surf lesson!!
I actually slept quite well and didnt feel bad at all when we had to get up; especially after about 5 cups of coffee :). Breakfast was another buffet style affair and we had such a choice of great cereals I stood there for ages trying to choose! In the end i went with a bit of weetabix with some cocopops on top. Then I had some fruit and for a treat I got some bacon and scrambled egg but only had a couple of bites of each; I was so proud of myself for being able to leave my plate half full!
Then it was time to surf!!! My dressing had come off from the night before so I went to the office to see if they had some waterproof bits as I didnt want to get sand all stuck to my leg. They wrapped me up in a bandage and Duct tape which was funny. The lesson began with a classroom style introduction about the waves and surf boards. Then we were given the boards and head down to the beach.
We had to place the boards on the sand so we could practice getting up. It was quite funny really; I didnt think I would have the energy to keep pushing myself up at that time in the morning. From all the popping up I had been doing though my bandage managed to fall off even though it was wrapped up with duct tape! I pulled it off and left it at the side. Then we head to the water...
I was mostly relieved about my leg not stinging like crazy; I couldnt feel it at all. The instructors helped us out loads by pushing us when the wave had got there. I actually managed to be the first to stand up!! I was so proud and completely shocked, I think I was screaming a bit the whole time. I did try to do it myself by paddling but it was so hard to get the power up to actually move enough so I didnt really manage to get going properly. I think after a few gym sessions I would have been alright. I stood up 3 times altogether and it was soo much fun :) I'd love to live near a surfing beach so that I could go often and practise.
When we head back in I rushed to the showers as there was about 20 of us trying to use the 4 showers available, as well as other people on the campsite. I managed to get in fairly quickly thankfully. I couldnt believe that it was only 10.30am by the time I got out of the shower. We had done so much that day already. The rest of the time at surf camp was spent chilling out so I decided to book some hostels for my stay up the east coast I managed to get one of the best hostels in the country in Cairns called Gilligans. It only cost $17 a night and has a gym, pool, bar and free dinner every night! Lunch was at 12 and a nice salad buffet with cold meats. Then we set off for Byron Bay at 1pm on a four hour drive which we actually described as not bad! You can tell we havent been in England for a while since a 4 hour drive is short to us!
