I've spent the last week in Cairns. There hasnt been much to do in city itself but some good spots surrounding Cairns.
We did a day trip to Kuranda about half an hour north of Cairns. The town was small and the markets and railway station where its main attractions. The railway station was beautiful as it was set right in the rainforest... if only english railway stations looked like that! In the afternoon we took the sky rail back to Cairns. The cableway was a total of 7.5km and reached a height of 40metres. It took you above the canopy of the Barron Gorge National Park. The sky rail lasted an hour an a half with two stops. The first was Barron Falls Station where you had stunning views over Barron River, Gorge and Falls. The second stop was Red Peaks station located in the heart of the rainforest here you had panoramic views accross the Barron River Valley. Â
We have also done a 3 day trip up the coast to Cape Tribulation. We crossed the Daintree river on a crocodile cruise. It was windy, hot and the river was at high tide all of which are conditions crocodiles dont like! We were however lucky enough to spot 3 crocodiles! We spent the night at the Beach House hostel in wooden treehouses. It was set right in the rainforest located meters from the Beach! Cape Tribulation beach was stunning, white sand and cyrstal clear waters! Unfortunatley no swimming though due to the deadly stingers! If you got stung you would only have 10mins to live!! We joined the tour again at lunchtime the next day where we made our way to Port Douglas, our next overnight stopover. On our way we stopped at Mossman Gorge which was my favourite bit of the tour. It was beautiful and there were clear swimming hoels where we went swimming. The current was very strong in parts though and Emma had a lucky escape of being dragged down the stream! Very funny for us to watch but not for Emma! Lol!
We spent the next day chilling out in Port Douglas and indulging ourselves in the choice of 42 flavours of ice creams, then we made it back to Cairns for Saturday night!
On tuesday, dependent on passing my dive medical im doing my 5 day PADI open water Dive course! We have 2 days of training and then 3 days and 2 nights on the outer Greater Barrier Reef onboard the dive vessel! By the end i would have done 9 dives including a night dive! Cant wait! :-)
