Arrived in Borneo at Pangkalan Bun and boarded our klotok, which will be our means of transportation on the river system for the next three days. A klotok is a traditional boat that plies the river system here. It is 2.5m X 12.5m. We had the choice of either sleeping on the klotok (mattresses on the main deck) or staying at the Rimba Lodge. We were not about to rough it on the klotok. On boarding the boat in Kumai, we saw several large, 4-storey concrete buildings with small holes in the walls. Our guide informed us these were bird houses for swallows. The swallows build nests inside the building and the nests are gathered (after the little ones leave) to produce exotic food (bird's nest soup) and medicines. The swallows build new nests and the process is repeated. The main sightings on our 3 hour journey to Rimba Lodge were several groups of Probiscis monkeys. Rimba Lodge is an eco-lodge adjacent to the Tanjung Puting National Park where the Orangutan Reserves are located. Obviously, no internet service so all of my blogs will be posted when we arrive in Jakarta or Singapore in a few days. Also, the location on the map is Sampit. That is not exactly where we were but it is the closest place on the map that this program recognizes.
