The reason we came to Borneo was to see Orangutans in their natural setting. Three hours by klotok brought us to the Orangutan Research Station #3 which was established in 1986 by Dr. Birute Mary Galdikas, a Canadian professor who has dedicated her life to Orangutan research and protection. The centre also reintroduces orphaned or deserted orangutan pets back into the wild. We then witnessed a feeding session where probably 15+ Orangutan showed up, along with a Gibbon monkey and a wild boar. The deforestation that is taking place in Borneo is making it difficult for Orangutan to find food in the wild. Some are semi-wild. They will go for days living in the wild and foraging for food but will also return for feed provided by the research centre. The Orangutan are extremely intelligent and very human-like. Apparently, their DNA is a 97% match with that of humans. This was a great day and met all our expectations. Some great pictures.
