Transferred from Yogyakarta to Semarang by car. We had to get to Semarang to catch our flight to Borneo tomorrow. Nine hour drive although we stopped in Solo (or Surakarta) for 4 hours (tour and lunch). Visited an old museum that had a collection of musical instruments, many of which look like cooking pots. Then toured the Sultan's Palace. This is a different sultan than the one in Yogyakarta. Two brothers had a falling out ten generations ago and one moved to Yogyakarta to establish a new sultanate while the other stayed in Surakarta (Solo). Traffic in Indonesia is dreadful. Throughout the whole trip today we hardly left one town/village before entering another, each with their own traffic jams. No car (or motorbike, which greatly outnumber cars) will yield and everyone tries to cut off the other. We are having to meet the challenge of dealing with the local currency. First trip to an ATM produced 2,000,000 rupiah, all for a little over $200. It takes some adjustment to price calculations when you need to drop 4 zeros off any price (i.e. a beer at the hotel is IRP35,000 -- about $3.50 -- which is actually quite expensive compared to almost any other product). Tomorrow we are off to Borneo -- Pangkalan Bun -- for 3 days. I doubt we will have any internet connections so my next blog will not likely be posted until Oct. 22
