Weary eyed we start our first day in Memphis with a breakfast at the world famous Arcade diner. Then hop on the trolley cars that take us into the city of Memphis. Memphis is a bit run down but people are friendly enough and we chat to the Good Morning Memphis crew who are filming at the local shopping Mall. We stroll down a very quiet Beale Street, which seems to still be in recovery mode after last nights drinking. We take a look at sun studios and then the day starts to heat up so off to find a cool drink and some lunch...it seems the weather down south is as nice as the West Coast which makes for a very happy street vendor who is happy to sell us a traditional US hotdog lunch :) On arrival at our hotel we notice a stunning guitar shaped pool which our balcony over looks and within minutes we realise that the Elvis music being played over central speakers in the hotel is a 24 thing...lucky for us he wrote a lot of songs. Graceland is just down the road but for today we settle in our hotel for some much needed sleep in a real bed...and if we want we can watch 24hr Elvis TV on not 1 but 2 channels...they love this guy as much as we do :)
We walk next door to get our Graceland tickets and within minutes are standing at the front doors of Graceland. Inside the rooms and tributes really do make you believe the king is still alive. If it wasn't for the dated appliance you would think he was just about to walk through the door at any moment and kick us all out of his house. It was in the room where all his achievements we're on display that a tear kind of creeps up on you and the question...why, why so early? The gardens are larger than I expected and there is an overall joy about the place but it's hard to actually pinpoint what is making us feel this way. We pay our respects at his memorial and leave Graceland watching the music noted gates close behind us. Back across the road Elvis music plays loud and proud and we take a look at Elvis's expensive automobile collection and then jump aboard his two planes. A tribute to him as a solider and then as a Movie star complete the Elvis themed day. We then get dressed up and ready for a night out on Beale street and head across the road to wait for the bus into town...and wait...and wait...who knows we could of still been waiting???
