On The Road with Lou!
After my big ride the day before I was going to sleep in that morning. I usually arise about 0800 and then work on this blog until about 1030, casually load The Rocket and then depart by 1100. This particular morning I was victim of a disturbing trend where the maids knock on the door early in the morning, in this case 0815 to inquire if I am staying another night. This despite the Do Not Disturb sign.
I find this particularly rude as the check out time is 1100. How about you ask me this question at 1055? I was in the hotel business for a long time, I get it, you want to maximize your housekeeping efficiency, but not everybody gets up when Bill does. Remember him? 0600 hours guy.
So the maid and I had words through the door and in the end she got what she wanted and I went back to bed. Same thing happened at 0900, couldn't tell if it was the same lady of not, but I was pretty irate. It took a lot not to rip her head off, but I am Lou 8.0 so you know, kinder, gentler.....
I finally arose at 1045 and started to pack my bike, in a leisurely fashion. The ladies had parked their stinky housekeeping cart right in front of my door so I had to bump into it on each trip I made. On the last trip I had packed all of my gear onto the bike and just had to leather up. I noticed all of the ladies were out of sight. I poked my head around the corner and saw them all down aways gathered around the Coke machine having a smoke.
I jumped at this opportunity to spirit away her housekeeping cart, pushing it down to the end of the building and around the corner, hiding it in the bushes. I went back to my room to don my leathers in the air conditioning. When I came out there was a group of maid ladies milling about and gesticulating wildly. I walked calmly past them, mounted The Rocket and sped away. It was 1115! It was minor victory, but a satisfying one!
I was in central eastern New Mexico so I continued down USGT 84 then turned east again on USGT 206 entering Texas. On thing I have learned about Texas over the years......................it is very fuggin big. While I pretty much was able to drive either the height or the width of any given state in one day, Texas takes numerous days to cross. It is my intent to cross under the mega - urban area Dallas.
Shortly after entering the state we found that most desireable of roads, the diagonal, going in both required directions, south and east. USGT 84. This hwy passed through Lubbock and eventually ended up in Post, TX where I stopped for the night.
They day was pretty uneventful and I didn't shoot any video. Texas did have a refreshing blend of old unrenewable energy production and new renewable ones. In one area, just inside the border, there was a field full of pump jack surrounded by windmills. I won't go on my rant again, but this is good use of available resources.
Once I had my room all set in Post, that is AC on full max, I changed into my shorts and hit the local grocery store for a spinach salad and some watermelon. I always feel like a bit of a weenie when I change out of my Darth Vader black leather outfit and change into my plaid shorts and wife beater shirt.
Naturally medicinal libations were going to be part of the purchase but I found that Texas counties can determine how liquor is sold on a case by case basis. In this county nothing is sold in super markets or gas stations. Beer and Coolers are sold in one shop, a drive through by the way, and what they call 'Package Liquor' is sold in a different shop, that also sells tobacco, ammo, fireworks, bait and all other things quintessentially 'merican.
Those of you who know me, may know of my love for large beverage containers. I usually drink from a pickle jar or fishbowl at home, and the coffee pot when traveling for business. I think I may have achieved the largest container ever, here. The remote is in to provide scale. It holds about 30 oz of your favorite libation.
Suitably supplied I retired to my room for the evening for some blogging.
