On The Road with Lou!
I was in 5 different States yesterday, starting in Ohio, briefly visiting Kentucky, drove across Indiana and Illinois and slept in Iowa.
I had purposely diverted to the Cincinnati area because I wanted to meet Noah, (of Ark fame!). Actually it was because the builder of my HD-NLE computer (aka The Juggernaut) was ADK, or Advanced Design of Kentucky, located just a few miles south of Cinci in a town called Alexandria.
I awoke to cloudy skies and wet leather as I was only partially successful in drying everything out in my hotel room, but I put everything on and headed south. Despite ADK’s reputation and the quality of the their products you’d never know it from their location. Main street in Alexandria is about 15 feet wide, very twisty, their shop is an old Mexican restaurant complete with arches and gables.
Met Scott the owner of ADK, and Eric, the builder of my Juggernaut, and got a ‘tour’ of the production facility. Got to see the bench where the Juggernaut was born and burned in. It was a special time for all of us!
Only spent about 30 minutes there, then headed north again. Had some navigation problems with my old nemesis, I-275 (the ring road to nowhere!) but was eventually able, mostly through luck (and 5% intuition) to find I-75 Westbound, which I stayed on for the balance of the day. I rode out of the weather an hour out of Cinci and it was beautiful blue sky the rest of the day. The wet leather actually proved to be a source of cooling during the mid day peak. There was a vicious headwind blowing out of the west in Illinois that finally dried everything up. My gloves still might be slightly damp.
Staying at the HoJo in Burlington, IA. They said the last room available was the Honeymoon suite, I said OK. It is a 2 room suite (89 bucks) that looks like it was decorated by an 80’s Goth Chick, it is hilarious. Unfortunately the internet connection is again flakey, I can maintain the connection long enough to sneak an email or status update through, but again cannot upload any content.
I guess I set a precedent earlier and now I am having trouble maintaining it. It’s odd, it seems the nicer the hotel, the crummier the connection.
Did about 800 km each of the past days, a pace I will have to maintain to get home on Saturday. The riding days are longer as I am chasing the setting sun, but the last hour or so is torture because I am looking right at it. The population density drops way off at the IA/IL state border so there is a lot more open road.
Talk soon!
