On The Road with Lou!
North Battleford, SK to Minot, ND (850 km). Woke up at 0800 and started packing to leave forthwith. Midway through packing, and that only takes about 15 minutes, my mouth started pounding. It has become a tradition for me to have dental surgery just before I leave on a bike trip and this year was no different. So I took some Advil and went back to bed. Departing around 1100 a little bummed out at the loss of quality riding time, but my spirits were buoyed by the beautiful blue sky day.
The RCMP in SK drive Blue PT Cruisers, White Toyota Matrixes and Brown Ford Expeditions, all slick tops (ghost cars). That strikes me as very unfair. I think a cop car should look like a cop car. I wonder if the PT Cruiser is an Interceptor model? Maybe with a blower or a NO2 system for big chases!
The riding was exceptional, tail wind most of the time, deserted flat and straight Saskatchewan roads.
I did have to back track about 30k as the Border Port of Estevan was closed due to flooding on Hwy 39. Got through the border NP, in fact the one guy wanted to talk at great lengths about the movie "The World's Fastest Indian" trying to draw some parallels to my bike. I gently pointed out to him that in the movie the actor is British and the bike American, in real life the bike is British and I am Canadian. That shut him up!
So I put over 11 hours in the saddle on Saturday and was just too bagged to do my thing last night. Minot, ND is a pretty rough town, it is in the middle of an oil boom apparently and it was tough to find a motel room. By the time I did, got checked in, and cleaned up all the restaurants in the immediate area had closed, so I had deep fried Mozzarella sticks for supper. Bad habits!
I am just getting ready to depart today with the goal of riding to Willmar, MN or that area. Hoping for a 700+ km day. I will have to ride on the Interstate briefly today, always a terrifying prospect. I wish I would have swapped out my fancy Arlen Ness mirrors for the stock Triumph ones, can't see a farging thing behind me!
Talk soon!
