This morning we had a lazy sort of morning and left the hostel at about 12.15pm, after checking Sarah´s latest photos on a DVD, and headed straight for the Sugarloaf Mountain, with Janice. We took the two journey cable car up (Laura holding her nerve!), first one to a neighbouring mountain and the second took us directly onto the Sugarloaf itself. It is truely beautiful and the panoramic views of the sporadic Rio city were gorgeous! Even better with the clear blue, sunshine soaked skys as a backdrop!
In the stifling heat we were soon ready for a re-freshing ice-lolly that we enjoyed kicked back on a sun-lounger, baking in the sun, in front the stunning scenery! After this we made our way back down, spotting some crazy mountain climbers enroute. - Crazy, because the Sugarloaf is literally vertical! We went down and wandered a short distance and waited some time for the bus that took us right outside the underground station, where we caught a metro to Urugaiana market where we had a wander round, both of us purchasing our Brazil souvenirs (Sarah black Haviana´s with the Brazilian flag on, Laura a Brazilian flag sarong). We then wandered through the streets towards the tram, which took us to Santa Teresa. It took us ages to find the tram station, we could see the lines and where they ran, but couldn´t find the station, until we decided to try one road (that would have possibly taken us in a circle) and Laura noticed a side street that lead upto the tram station! Yeah, at last! Our poor little feet and legs where killing us and then we had to line up for the longest 20 minutes of our lives! With our tummies well and truely rumbling like mad, by this point, we finally climbed aboard the rickety tram, which took us to the main ´square´ in the heart of Santa Teresa, at fast-walking-pace-speed! We hopped off and noticed a market (that was only on every 2nd Saturday of the month), which added to the bustling atmosphere. We soon settled on a busy typical Brazilian restaurant, with a local band playing, which, again, added to the bustling atmosphere. We all had a steak each, which was cooked to perfection (Laura - steak with gorgonzola and tomatoes and leeks, Sarah steak with a mushroom sauce and tagliatelle, with parmesan sauce) and tasted absolutely gorgeous!! After dinner we wandered a few of the neighbouring shops before browsing the market and heading back to Centro on the tram, where we caught the metro back to Copacabana, sufficiently shattered!
We spent the night chilling out in the hostel, cringing at Hugh (the crazy, insomniac staff member) singing and dancing in the bar. Then headed to bed, early at midnight.
