Woke up to rain, which continued for much of the day, at times heavy. We decided to spend the day driving in the countryside to the south and east of Melbourne. While the rain reduced somewhat our visibility, the scenery was still quite interesting. Pastoral country to the southeast of Melbourne. Forests in the Dandenong Park. We reached Phillip Island by mid-afternoon and the rain stopped. As a result, we were able to visit the Koala Conservation Centre, where 20 plus Koala live in a natural environment in the 5 hectare reserve. Also toured the island and walked the cliffs of the Nobbies at the south point. In the evening, we returned to the south coast to watch the penguin parade as hundreds of Little Penguins (about 12 - 14 inches high) return from the sea to their burrows after dusk. It is quite a tourist attraction with permanent bleachers for the tourists to watch the parade. The penguins don't seem to be bothered by the hundreds of tourists who are not allowed to leave the bleachers or walkways. It is a little commercialized but still interesting.
