The past two days have seen us travel north of Adelaide to the beginning of the Outback and the Flinders Range National Park. While we only got a glimpse of the Outback on the drive from Port Augusta to the Park, the desolation is evident. Flinders Range has some very interesting features, such as Wilpena Pond, a bowl-like feature that appears to be an old volcanic crater, but is not (see the photo and explanation). We spent time yesterday exploring the Range from the ground and were not very impressed. This morning we took a 20 minute flight over part of the Range, including Wilpena Pond. From the air, one has a much better appreciation of the beauty of the Range. No mountain range in Australia is very high compared to BC mountains, but some of the features in the Flinders Range are quite attractive. The haze and the windows of the plane did not allow our photos to do justice to the Range. Leaving Flinders we headed south passing through one of Australia's major grain producing regions. Looks very much like the Canadian prairies. We are in Clare tonight and will be exploring some of South Australia's major wine regions tomorrow.
