Day Three in Lisboa. My first question is why Lisboa? Historically it refers to the Barrios de Lisboa or the neighborhoods of Lisbon. Another explanation I found was that locals call their city Lisboa, which comes from the Phoenician term Alis Ubbo or calm port. Your choice, I guess. We walked all kinds of Barrios de Lisboa today. The Mason men like to walk, just ask my sister in law Mieke. We managed to get going at a decent hour today and jumped onto the Metro, now knowing where it is saved us time, and headed to city center near the port of Lisbon. We managed to walk parts of each of The Bairro Alto, Chiado and Alfama neighbourhoods. Lots of stairs to climb and narrow, winding alleyways that led us to either more stairs/alleyways or dead ends and cafe after cafe. Laundry hung from balconies and painted tiles adorned building after building. The colors I’ll remember fondly when thinking of Portugal will be yellow, terra cotta and blue. We enjoyed more gelato and a quick lunch before walking back to the hotel. Bill’s idea as apparently adding yet another 1.7 miles to our day long walk seemed like a good idea. Our viva viagem metro passes jostled in our pockets as we walked, reminding me with each step that we had an alternative way of getting home. Oh well, be sure to ask me if you’re going to Lisbon as we have two passes to give you. Honestly it was a beautiful day and the walk did not seem too long. We arrived back at the hotel in time to enjoy a late afternoon coffee. Dinner once again will be light, enjoying a selection of Tapas dishes and a glass of wine. We’re headed to Malaga, Spain tomorrow bright and early. Adeus Lisboa, please remember us fondly.
