Laura's Aussie Adventure!
Oh my god, you'll never guess how many mosquito bites I have ... I lost count at around 50!!!! I feel so ugly :0( Ha, ha! No, thankfully they are starting to clear up a bit now that we are back in Darwin as there don't seem to be as many here.
Well, after my last postcard we spent one night in Darwin and then headed to Kakadu National Park. Kakadu is the biggest national park in the NT and is somewhere that we always intended to go but weren't gonna take the car as you need a 4-wheel-drive to get to the biggest waterfalls - Jim Jim Falls and Twin Falls. We decided just to go for it though because the all the other areas are accessible and apparently the falls start to dry up from June so I figured that they might not be that big anyway.
At Kakadu we saw lots of Aboriginal Rock Art ranging from thousands of years old to more recent stuff, learned lots about the Aboriginal tribes who own the land and of their culture, climbed lots of rocks and saw lots and lots of birdlife and wildlife. On the last morning Michelle and I went on a boat cruise of Yellow Waters, which is on the South Alligator River. It was amazing! The tour guide was a half-Aboriginal-half-Swedish girl and she taught us so much about the area, the birds, the Aboriginal life and of course ... the crocodiles! We saw loads of crocodiles! They were all saltwater crocs and although Yellow Waters is freshwater, there are no freshwater crocs there as they are scared of the saltwater ones! Apparently the Saltwater croc is Australias most feared predator, more feared that the Great White Shark (this info is courtesy of Discovery Channel, via Trisha the tour guide!!), so thankfully we were safe in our boat! I learned lots about the wetlands birdlife and got to see White-bellied sea eagles, jabirus, etc, etc - Dad, I will teach you all this when I get home. Parents - you should be proud, ha, ha!!
We also saw lots more wallabies, buffalo, wild horses and BIG bushfires!!! We drove right through a bush fire at one point and ths is when I taught the girlies how to do an emergency stop in the automatic car! Didn't I say I would find it hard not to use my left foot?!?! I was trying to stop to take a photo of the fires but it didn't quite work out and we all nearly ended up through the windscreen - oops!!! :0)
So we are now back in Darwin at our hostel and we handed the car back this morning. The weather is absolutely roasting so we are starting to get a tan and we now have air conditioning in our room rather than a heater!! We have another 8 nights here so we have plenty of time to see the sights and to relax before heading to Bali. I can't believe I only have 8 days left in Australia :0(- gosh, how time flies when you are having fun! xx
