17th Feb - We left L.M with a hangover that a baby could die from. Maybe the 5 jugs of snakebite was overdoing it? Boarding the bus again, we shortly found ourselves at some dire place called Bushman's centre which was some sort of a museum. Quite frankly, I was in no fit state to go to a museum so I went for breakfast instead. I had a bagel whilst Stu chomped on a rather unappetising all day breakfast . We all had a look around the 'farm' which had about 2 animals in it. Kylie (our child on tour) bought some animal food and got rather excited feeding the animals. That was enough excitement for me that morning.
We jumped back on the bus and I napped most of the way to... Franz Josef. I had been pretty excited about this as this is where you can do a glacier walk! When we arrived, we booked our glacier walk and we checked into our own little room once again. We were reunited with the other people from our bus who we had been split from so it was so good to see everyone! Felt like we'd been apart for ages! We chilled for the rest of the day and then we went to the bar onsite which was indeed, the nicest backpacker bar we'd ever been to! The boys had agreed to cook us dinner as it was their turn. They made us spaghetti bolognese. When dinner was ready, we made a smooth transition from the bar to the kitchen. The boys did well. We headed back to our room for some cheeky goon drinking and headed back to the bar and stayed there until we hit the sack.
18th Feb - We woke up early the next day to do the glacier walk. My iPod was influxed with messages from my mother telling me off about how much money I'd spent the past few weeks. Certainly not a good wake up call! Kylie and Stu walked to the Glacier office to check whether we could still do it as a lot of trips had been cancelled due to the foggy weather as the helicopters were unable to fly. They shook their head and our walk was delayed until later on in the day. I was convinced we wouldn't be able to do it and persuaded myself that it was just as well as I had no money (according to mother Edge and should be saving every penny left). We went back to sleep and woke up later on. Kylie and Stu headed back to check whether we were all good for the walk. They reported back that it wasn't and I had accepted it. I went downstairs to chat to the rest of our bus that was leaving that day and suddenly Hannah shouts 'We've got to go.. Now!!!!'. I was so scared thinking something serious had happened, then realised that someway.. somehow we'd made it onto another glacier walk that was going ahead!! I wasn't particularly excited cause I had pretty much made up my mind not to do it, even though I wanted to. But I went along to the office anyway. Whilst I was there, I made the decision not to go even though the others were. It was a hard decision but reality had hit home about my bank balance. I walked out of the office and Kylie ran out saying Stu's gonna pay for you. I said no he's not I'm not doing it. And before I knew it, I was back in the office signing up and getting my glad rags on to walk on top of a bloody glacier!!! As they said, we were a team and we were going to do everything together :) Your the best.
Once we were all geared up with our hiking boots and thermal wear, we walked over to the helicopter airport and prayed that we were definitely ok to fly. Luckily we were all ok to fly! Woohoo! We sat inside the helicopter and put our headphones on so we could hear the pilot. I was pretty nervous after my last experience of being in a helicopter in Vegas; it was pretty bumpy!! Surprisingly, I actually really enjoyed the ride and wasn't scared at all. What was totally awesome though, was when we landed on the glacier! When we came out, it was so immensely windy because of the propellers. Our guide told us to sit down and attach our spikes to the bottom of our boots. These are what we needed to be able to walk on ice, and essentially were what would save my life! As my name is Miss Clumsy.
When we were all good to go, we were led up the glacier, crunching the ice under our feet. It was so coooool! We walked for 3 hours up the glacier and we even climbed through a tunnel of ice. As we climbed higher and higher, the glacier looked more amazing. It all felt so surreal!
At the end of the glacier walk, we had a group photo and flew back via helicopter back over the mountains. I was so glad I did it in the end, and I have mainly two amazing people to thank for that.
When we got back to our hostel, we met Char and Rosie who we hadn't seen for ages!! Si and Adz had left In the morning so the girls took their place in our room. Han, Kylie and Stu went to the hot pools and I hung out with Ro and Char in the hot tub onsite. When everyone was back, we just relaxed and had a night off drinking. It was thoroughly needed. I think we were all in bed at 11pm!
