Hong Kong has been a bit of a wash out all round really. Cloudy, misty and rainy but also I was not that well so didn't venture too far or do all the things on my list.
However the YMCA hotel in Kowloon was a good find, especially as I spent quite a lot of time in the hotel room. I would I'm sure have enjoyed the pool and fitness centre but wasn't really up for it. So in the 8 weeks of traveling and lugging my trainers around with me since Xmas, I think I've worn them only 3 or 4 times...
I had a partial view of the harbour from my room so managed to still enjoy the symphony of lights show every evening from the comfort of my room with the accompanying music crackling on my clock radio.
I did make it to Hong Kong Island via the traditional star ferry yesterday and went by tram up to the peak - always worth doing. Walking the 3 km circular walk at the top was a bit eerie though as the fog was pretty thick in places, no view at all (see photo!) and hardly anyone around, just the sound of fog horns blowing down below.
As the Peninsular Hotel was next door to the YMCA, even though still not 100% well but with my appetite in tact, I decided another famous afternoon tea was required in a classic hotel of its day (definitely not what the doctor would have ordered). I had to queue for about an hour, but my kindle helped the time pass not to mention the live quartet playing those classics. Very traditional this time, right down to the Devonshire clotted cream and in glamorous, ornate surroundings full of tourists snapping pictures at every opportunty as appears the case everywhere in Hong Kong - but a good way to spend the afternoon before a very early start to catch the bus to the airport to get my flight back to the UK.
I'm looking forward to seeing everyone and also glad it's warmed up a bit however tan has definitely faded already. As ever I have packed quite a lot in with catching up with friends and family, some Fairtrade work as well as a board meeting in Germany. I don't yet have a flight booked to leave or full confirmation on what is next so the planner in me is feeling a little unsettled - but I'm sure it will all be fine and I will be heading to Nairobi at the beginning of April.
The four months have gone incredibly quickly but looking back I seemed to have packed a huge amount in and met up with some friends and made some new ones along the way. I have calculated some stats (not that I have had time on my hands or anything and all approximate). I have been on 25 different planes (so not great for my carbon footprint...), visited 9 different countries, been on at least 19 different boats - a few several times over and done 21 dives gaining my Advanced Open Water certification. Met one pop star, seen in person a Nobel Peace Prize winner and made at least 7 new friends that I'd hope to keep in touch with in the future. Spent the most time in one stretch individually with both my parents and am still talking to them! Hung out with more pensioners than I ever expected...and haven't yet got a tattoo (but thinking about it)!
There are so many fascinating places out there to visit and get to know that rather than quell my appetite to travel, it just makes me want to do more of it. I'm still not sure what lies ahead for me but surprisingly this is not yet keeping me awake at night. I think plenty of variety will be in order and being abroad will definitely come into it, not to mention hopefully a warmer climate!
