Tuesday 11th we stayed on a great campsite right on the beach just a 5 minute walk from the turtle rookery wich is a protected beach where loggerhead turtles use asa nesting ground during the breeding season. We were really lucky as the turtles start laying on the beach from the 7th november and when we arrived there the ranger told us that they hadn't had any turtles in yet so we might not get to see one. We had to wait around for 3hours and finally the first turtle arrived on the beach!! As soon as she had found a nesting area we were allowed to go down to watch her digging out the nest and laying the eggs. It was amazing to see and it took about an hour from start to finish. We watched her crawl back down to the beach and then dissapear into the ocean where she will apparently stay for the next 5 years!! Well worth the small admission fee.
Early next morning we headed for hervey bay, our main reason for going here is to make the tour to Fraser Island. Fraser is the largest sand island in the world (apparently there is more sand on fraser than the sahara desert!!) We booked our trip and we were ready and raring to go. Saturday the 15th we were up at 5am and made our way to the aussie trax office to pick up our 4x4. We got a landrover defender that looked like a right heap of s***, but it did the job. We packed up with a whole laoda supplies for the next 3 days and headed for the ferry terminal at river heads. 50 minutes later we arrived on fraser, the tracks were extremely bumpy but fun. On the first day we saw lake birrabean, Eli creek (for a refreshing swim), the maheno ship wreck and then set up camp at waddy point.
Next morning we woke bright and early after our not so comfy night!! We took a swim in the champagne pools which is the only place in the saltwater you can swim due to man-eating tiger sharks and dangerous under water currents. We walked up to indian head which is a fantastic lookout where you can see turtles and mantarays in the ocean below. You can even see sharks if your lucky but unfortunatly we didnt see any!! Next was lake wabby an emerald looking lake at the foot of a huge sand dune, god it was a hard walk on the burning sand to get here lol!! Just before dark we set up camp at central station.
Slightly rainy and overcast today, but it didnt matter, we drove down to lake mckenzie which looked just as amazing as it would of in the sunshine. The water was crystal clear and great for swimming by far the best on the island. We took the early afternoon ferry back to the main land as the weather was starting to get bad. Definately reccomend this trip, we had a great time.
Checked the news on the internet and Queensland was hit by its worst cyclone in 25 years last night so that explains the awful weather!! Lucky us hey!!
Anna and Franz left us this morning to head south so it was back to being on our own for a while, seems a bit strange though!! Were flying to sydney on friday so are just gonna hang around hervey bay for a few days. will blog soon x x x
