Trephina Gap Gorge and John Hayes Rockhole
Great day today. Spent the morning catching up on maths schoolwork which was challenging, areas and perimeters and abacus counting. Then after a yummy lunch onto the Gorge. Kids were all in their bathers, ready for a swim, as it was a warm day today. Did the rim walk and then down into the Trephina Gorge, but No Water!!! Sorry kids, No swimming, at least not here. Went back to camp after taking in the amazing scenery and bribed kids with an icy pole as they were left partially unsatisfied without their swim.
We decided to head to the John Hayes Rockhole nearby for a hopeful swim. It wasn't to be today but it didn't matter because the rock climbing was great at the Rockhole and we went from one to the other. The kids loved the challenge and us too. Luuk helped each one of the kids, one by one, up the steep rock faces to see the tiny swimming pools in amongst the caves and rocks. The water was too cold and still and covered with green algae. We got great footage and photos however.
A couple made Luuk's day when his mischievousness was flattered when they stated "it must have been a rocky road and challenge for you guys to get that car in here". Signs indicated 'high clearance 4WD essential '. Of course, Luuk had, once again, set the car at its lowest position after a serious 4WD to get the tongues wagging, which it did. He sounds bored doesn't he??
Sitting by the campfire after a great day, had spaghetti carbonara cooked over the campfire. Met our neighbours who are surprisingly from Limburg, South Holland. They have two girls who speak fluent Dutch so the kids practiced a little. Baked bread over the campfire for the first time and burnt it to smithereens. Used the camp oven but had the fire too hot and obviously had too many coals on top of it. Will try again tomorrow night with damper so we don't have to wait the 2 rises. We are determined to master it some time soon and then will post some good recipes that work. Toasted marshmallows with the Dutchies and then settled down to sleep, absolutely exhausted once again, which isn't a bad thing when your day has been full of good things. Lights out.
