Lisa's Big Adventure
Whitby
We left Liverpool New Years Day and began the trek across to the east coast, bypassing Manchester, Leeds and York on our way. We'd just passed York and were venturing onto the "b" grade roads when the snow started appearing out the car windows. We'd know it was cold the night before, but hadn't realised it had snowed. At once stage we joined about 20 other cars and parked on the side of the road and got out for a snowball fight and so Mum could build a very dodgy snowman.
Continuing on, we stopped off at a little village (can't remember the name) where they film the TV show "Heartbeat". As Dad is a devoted watcher, he was very excited and he and Mum explored the town. With cold wet feet, I went for a walk and then returned to the car to wait for them. It really didn't interest me - but that was probably because it was from Heartbeat and I really don't like the show!
We arrived in Whitby late in the afternoon and found another B&B to stay in for the night and then went for a walk. Whitby is a coastal town, most famous for being the birthplace of Captain Cook. It was a pretty little town and we managed to very easily wander the streets that night, before finding some food - a marvellous roast - my first English roast believe it or not.
The following morning, we spent another couple of hours wandering around Whitby, climbing the steps to the cathedral which offered great views over the town. Mum and I did a little shopping and browsing while Dad went and looked at the boats. We left Whitby and then continued on our way back south towards London.
I did enjoy exploring Whitby, although I don't feel like you need a huge amount of time here. It was really just another cute little English town, of relevance to Australians due to the Captain Cook connection.
