Lisa's Big Adventure
Well, we didn't arrive in Munich until very late afternoon and went straight to our hotel. The day had been a very emotional one as we went to the Maulthausen concentration camp, and then to see the church from the Sound of Music. I can't really express how I felt at Malthausen so I won't try, except to say that it would have to be one of the most emotional experiences I've had. And it is something that changed me forever, and my outlook on life. Suddenly, every day seemed to count and my petty disappointments didn't seem so important anymore.
For our night in Munich, we went to a beer hall restaurant. As we were heading out of the hotel to board the bus, it started snowing. And I will always remember grabbing Hitomi's hand as we ran towards the bus crying "It's snowing! It's snowing!" A definite highlight. It was apparently very usual for it to snow in October in Munich. I couldn't stop looking out of the window, and watching it pouring from the sky. I've seen snow before but it just felt so magical. Cold, but magical. We arrived at the beer hall restaurant and had a great dinner of schnitzel and a stein of beer. Yes, even me, the non-beer drinker, drank a stein. This was partly as it was my dare to drink a stein and I was determined to get through it! Had a great night, got to see German dancing and singing on the stage. It was a very lively experience and felt very traditional.
The following morning, we headed into Munich for a few hours before we had to be on our way to Hopfgarten. Unfortunately, it didn't really allow enough time to do anything. It was also so cold that being outside wasn't a viable option. So I spent the 2 hours wandering around, browsing in shops and then heading back to the main square to see the 11am Glockenspiel clock chiming, something you must see once. Then it was time to board the bus and say farewell to Munich, having seen very little of it, but having experienced the food and beer!
