Lisa's Big Adventure
Living it up in the French Riviera - Nice
To say that Nice was nice would be a complete understatement. Nice was just gorgeous. Our accommodation was in the little town of Antibes, halfway between Cannes and Nice and we were given a day to explore the area. My origional thought was to go to Cannes for a few hours and then head up to Nice for the afternoon. I'm very glad now that I decided to spend all day in Nice as it really was one of the highlights of the trip.
Situated on the Mediterranean, Nice has stunningly blue water on one side and mountainous regions on the other. I started off my day heading out to the Matisse museum. Henri Matisse has always been one of my favourite artists so the chance to see his work was too good to pass up - even if it meant delaying my visit to the beach by an hour or so. The museum was set in the house where he once worked and contained not only his artworks, but furniture he'd owned and knick knacks. All in all, a good museum and allowed me to see those artworks I've loved.
My culture over for the day, I headed down to the beach. Of course, had to browse on the way in the shops! The beach at Nice was, unfortunately, a pebbled beach. This was a little disappointment as I was hoping to see sand but of course, I made do. My first swim in the Mediterranean was cold but enjoyable, in fact the worst part was getting in and out over the pebbles as they hurt my feet! A quick lie on the pebbles to dry off and it was time for some more shopping then a hike up to the lookout that overlooked the town for some absolutely stunning views. A little more browsing in the shops followed before I headed back to the site for dinner and to get ready for our trip into Monte Carlo.
While I didn't do much sightseeing in Nice, it was an absolutely fabulous day as I was able to relax, enjoy the sun, sea, sand and shops. This place is high on my list of places to come back to, for a few days so that I would be able to explore not only more of Nice, but Cannes and Antibes also.
