After spending 2 nights in Nelson we were off again. This time to Greymouth, the land of hair mullets and inbreeds!!! Had it not been for the country's Monteith's brewery being located here we suspect the Kiwis would have drilled around the town and pushed it into the sea (towards Australia) as it's own little island with it's odd inhabitants firmly detached from the mainland.
We left 6 Sept on the 8:15am Magic Bus taking us across the picturesque Buller Gorge one of the more remote and rugged areas of the country. We stopped for a drink and moved onto Cape Foulwind, named so by Captain Cook. The cape is home to many fur seals. We
watched them play on the rocks and took many photos.
The bus then took us through Paparoa National Park which is a subtropical rainforest. We took a 20 minute walk down to the rough sea to see the famous pancake rocks.
We arrived in Greymouth which was just an overnight stop before going to Franz Josef. We checked into Noahs Ark hostel where they have each room decorated in animal themes! We were given the Zebra room! Unknown to us it was the best room to have. Take a look at the photos on our blog!
At Noahs Arc Lisa liked playing a tug of war with the owners friendly dog a golden retriever. The dog was big and at only two he was strong. He liked being around people and would come into our room and make itself at home.
This evening we went on Monteith's Brewery tour with the group from the Magic Bus. We were given a tour around the brewery followed by tasting cider and 6 beers! We were told by the coach driver to keep questions to a minimum on the tour so there is more drinking time so that is exactly what we all did. After the fourth stop during the tour (with no questions asked) the guide was on to us and asked if the driver had told us not to ask questions.....busted!!!!
One of the guys on the tour, a Brazilian called Cicero, got really drunk and was funny to watch. The evening consisted of the group eating dinner, drinking jugs of beer and playing games! It got a little messy! We were entertained by Cicero getting more drunk on beer
and trying to chat up a girl from Texas called Morgan then trying a girl called Meghan, another called Gill, and a young blonde German girl then trying Morgan again before repeating the routine. Comical to watch.
We awoke the next day looking forward to Franz Josef.
