Our plan was to drive through Wanaka on our way to Queenstown but as we arrived we couldn't help but pull up at the beautiful lakeside and take in the scenery. Within an hour, we had the beers cracked open and were tucking into some Hokey Pokey ice-cream.....as the Kiwi's say - sweet as!
The decision had been made, whilst turning slightly pink, we were staying here. So we checked into the nearest campsite and headed out for some beers. Considering this was a Saturday night and Wanaka is named the up and coming Queenstown, we were expecting good things here. We were massively disappointed as most bars were completely dead, so we had an early night at around midnight, then Ben watched the Boro draw with the Gunners 1 each on the net until 3am.
We were up early the following day (7am) for a scenic flight over the Aspiring National Park to Milford Sound. We flew over LoTR's Misty Mountains and many other LoTR's scenery which was so cool, we circled the 3rd largest mountain in NZ (Mt Aspiring) and then finally landed in our 6 seater jet in Milford Sound after flying right the way through the Sound, it was brilliant. Then we hopped on our little ferry and took a closer tour of the Sound. The Sound is actually a Fiord, meaning it was created by a glacier carving out rock and making a river in the mountains. The scenery was breathtaking and there were loads of seals, some dolphins and the odd little Penguin (which didn't come out to play for us unfortunately). Despite Ben not getting his perfect Postcard pictures due to weather, at least we got to go, as many tours had been canceled due to poor visibility! It was incredibly expensive, but one of the highlights of NZ so far!
Wanaka isn't great for a night out but Lisa fell in love with the scenery and the relaxed atmosphere of the little town. With its summer and then it's winter ski, it's certainly somewhere you could see yourself living!
