We arrived in Queenstown to some pretty awful weather, it was pouring down! We had a nosey around the town centre and looked at the beautiful scenery then decided we needed to save some cash so pulled up on the lakeside to camp over. Next morning we were due to do some rafting which got canceled due to the weather so we had a day of doing nothing except eating then drinking on the evening. Ben then booked himself on the 8am Bungy jump for the following morning and we both booked on the White Water Rafting for the afternoon.
Next morning Ben woke up early with a sore head and headed off to his 134m Nevis Bungy which may be the 3rd highest in the world (not sure on that though). Ben got strapped up and headed to the edge of the little cable car and was told he had to jump after the count of three. So on that signal, he then became slightly worried at the thought of jumping out into the middle of the canyon but thought "what the hell" and Superman dived off anyway. A couple of seconds later he was bouncing back up with a huge grin and a little bit of relief.....it was awesome! See the photos/video on facebook (cant upload any videos onto the blog).
Then came the afternoon and the rafting. After a few days of heavy rain, the previous couple of days rafting had been canceled due to high water levels (unsafe). So our conditions were perfect, high levels meaning harder rapids but just inside the "safe enough to do it" category. Lisa was rather worried after 10 minutes of going downstream and asking the guide "do the rapids get much bigger?" to which he replied "we haven't been through a rapid yet!" Was quite funny. We got bashed around a load and soaking wet, it was quite a good adrenaline rush then on the last corner/rapid we went through a cave which was about 200m long, we couldn't see a thing and had to duck down to avoid smashing our heads on the roof of the cave. As soon as we came out there was a huge rapid that we flew straight into and we were massively out of position as we came down the rapid, our raft flipped right over, we all went flying, Ben smashed his face against a guys helmet (ouch) and Lisa didn't have a clue where on earth she was as she couldn't even see the boat when she ended up surfacing! It was so funny but for a couple of seconds, all 8 of us were panicking slightly.
On the night we met up with a couple from our rafting (Chris & Nerys) and headed out in Queenstown, we sank a fair few Tea Pots, beers, shots, vino's and headed into Winnie's, which had Karaoke Wednesday! Lisa got up with Nerys and two Irish women we met the night before and sang "All I Want For Christmas Is You" which got a great reception and won the girls a free shot each!. Then they sang ABBA and Dancing Queen, then after some dutch courage (Jager) Ben & Chris got up for one of the final songs of the night, The Poges' "Fairytale of New York". Ben & Chris felt that the organisers were deliberately keeping this song back, for the evenings final performance! For those who have had the misfortune of listening to Ben on karaoke before, he's probably "The Worst Singer The World Has Ever Heard". BUT, on this occasion, much to Lisa's disappointment, Ben & Chris went down a treat, with our two Irish friends for backup (doing the Kirsty McCall sections) we took it by storm, people were even clambering onto the stage to join in and the bar was rocking, with everybody dancing and joining in! We hit the dancefloor a little later then stopped off at Fergburger for a drunken snack, our favourite burger bar for some takeaway on the way home.
Hungover, we got up early (10am) to ride the Gondola for some fantastic views of Queenstown before making the 5 hours slog to Dunedin.
