Day 59: we had an early start today has we needed to catch the ferry across to Belize city and then take a bus upto the border between Belize and Guatemala. After the 2 hour ferry crossing we reached Belize city, which leaves a lot to be desired, its very poor and one of the few places I have felt unsafe and uneasy staying in, I was glad we only had to make to the bus station and wait an hour for our bus. All the buses in Belize and referred to as 'chicken' buses so from that I'm sure you can impinge the condition of the buses and the mix of people on them. Despite this the bus journey was good and only took two hours to get to the border. Although we had heard news that there had been difficulties crossing the border we had no problems and made it across fine. We had had enough of chicken buses to decided to splash out and get a taxi to Flores our destination in Guatemala. We arrived in Flores late evening and after a final boat journey across the lake we finally made to our hostel.
Day 60: Flores is town situated on a small island in the middle of a lake. The lake is the biggest and deepest in central America. Our hostel is on San Migel another island on the lake so if we need to get anywhere we have to get a little boat across to Flores and then a tuk tuk across a bridge to the main land. Today we just spent our time exploring Flores and San Miguel. We walked around the town of Flores then took the boat back across to San Miguel and walked through the jungle to the beach and a viewing platform onto of the hill.
Day 61: today we had a very early start, we were picked up at 4:30 to begin our tour of Tikal ruins. Tikal ruins is the largest site and probably most impressive set of Mayan ruins to exist. They are located in the Guatemalan jungle and this setting makes them even more impressive. The site was very quiet and still not a huge tourist destination so you are still able to climb up a number of the big temples giving you amazing views of the jungle and the huge temples soaring out of the canopy. We had a really good day and as a bonus we even got to see spider monkeys and howler monkeys in the trees.
Day 62: yet another early start today. We were picked up at 4:30 again today but this time to make our way back into Mexico. This will took us ten hours, on two buses a taxi and a boat! And was the strangest border crossing ever, with almost no immigrations or boarder control it felt like we had been smuggled back into Mexico!
