I took the ferry to Phi Phi from Phuket Monday. I fell over with my backpack on while running for the bus to take me to the pier. I hurt my knees a bit but was otherwise ok. It was quite funny actually - because of the weight of the backpack I sort of fell forward & did a flip & ended up on my back but couldn't get up because the bag was still attached to me. Had to wait for someone to come & get me out! Phi Phi is paradise! I love it here. I arrived Monday & bumped into Franz who I'd met in Vietnam. He was travelling with Maurice & Dutch so I tagged along with them for the week. We headed straight for the beach which is amazing, it's so beautiful here! The water is so blue it doesn't look real.
We went to this bar every night called the reggae bar. In the middle of the bar they have a Muay Thai boxing ring (thai kickboxing basically). It's great fun to watch & if you challenge your friend you get a free bucket. It's amazing what some people will do for a free drink. Some friends were beating the hell out of eachother. So Maurice persuaded Dutch to take him on in the ring. Maurice is 35 & used to be a pro boxer & poor Dutch is 19 & before that night had never been in a fight in his life. You can guess who won. It was hilarious though. Some woman challenged me but she had the biggest biceps so I politely declined.
The next day we took a day trip around all the islands. We did lots of snorkling & went to bamboo island, monkey island, Maya bay (where The Beach was filmed) & loads of other stops. It was a really fun day although everyone was disappointed we didn't see any sharks (we were really unlucky apparently). Maya beach was gorgeous, absolutely amazing but it was a shame there were so many tourists on the beach & boats in the bay.
I loved Maya bay so much that I booked to go camping there. It was expensive but so worth it. We stopped to do some snorkling on the way although I stayed on the boat & helped the crew catch some fish for the barbeque. Then we got there & set up our tents which was hilarious. It was amazing watching the sunset & the day tourists had gone by then & they're only allowed to take max 25 people at one time so we really had the beach to ourselves. We just ate, sang songs, & did some star gazing. We even had a little midnight swim to see the plankton shimmer. I wasn't going back in though after we saw a sea snake.
When we finally retired to our tents I couldn't really sleep. The weather got bad & I kept dreaming there were snakes in my sleeping bag. The next morning we had to swim back to the boat because the waves were too rough for the boat to come close to the shore. I wasn't too happy about that after seeing the sea snake the night before. It was well worth the money. I'm very tired now though. The plan was to chill out for a week somewhere but I don't feel as if I've chilled out at all. I'm off to Koh Lanta later today though which is apparently very quiet so maybe I'll get some rest there. I'll be sad to leave here though, put some pics up when I get a chance.
