Continuing through the Northern Territory (NT), I'm now in Alice Springs which is the biggest settlement in the NT and the most expensive place to live. It's so remote - you have to drive two hours to get to a service station etc and it's decidedly dodgy of a night time. Do not wander along these streets by yourself. You really are 'Out Back' and stand out like a sore thumb if you are a red, mozzy bitten European with a Scouse accent like myself!
Have been to the Devils Marbles which is a cool rock formation (yes rocks can be cool and Uluru really rocks!!) of lots of round stones and an impressive split rock, looks like someone has cut it in half right down the middle. The story goes that early European settlers passed the area and all of their camels died and so they believed the area cursed, hence the name.
Also went for a tour of Alice Springs and visited the original Alice Spring which interestingly, the real Mrs Alice Spring did not actually visit. You didn't know that did you? Well, now you do and if this question ever pops up in a pub trivia quiz, you will have me to thank. Anyway, I tried some bush tucker here including crocodile, kangaroo, emu and camel. Kangaroo and camel are really lovely, but emu is very tough and not that nice. Crocodile is absolutely foul, eeugh, the memory of it makes me retch!
I also went on a Dreamtime Aboriginal guided tour. You can see how and where the aboriginal people in the area still live off the land, cooking kangaroo and eating grubs. They also earn a living by producing traditional aboriginal rock art on to canvas which is really impressive as each picture really does tell a story of aboriginal life and you can decode the meaning. I tried some freshly cooked kangaroo tail and bush bread but not the witchety grub - it smells more appealing once its cooked - smells like scrambled egg.
Also visited Anzac Hill here (Aussie and New Zealand soldiers war memorial) and the Royal Flying Doctors Service - really fascinating.
I have been bitten to shreds in Alice Springs which puzzles me as I didn't get bitten in Darwin or Kakadu, but now I seem to be mozzy food.
Tip of the day - buy a fly net when if you are come here
