Last night I spent a beautiful night sleeping under the stars in the Aussie outback at Kings Creek Station. I slept in a 'swag' which holds a sleeping bag on the ground - no tent or fire. It was stunning - the stars are quite incredible as there is obviously no light pollution out here. You can never get bored of looking at the consetllations. It was a lovely warm night and I wish I could do it again - would recommend it to anyone.
Since then I've been to the "Big Ones" - Uluru (aka Ayres Rock) and Kata Juta (aka The Olgas). We did a walk through Kata Juta which was good, but very hot (39 degrees I later found out). Kata Juta is quite stunning - the rocks seemingly appearing out of nowhere, a flat land and yet there is a huge rock formation which the Aboriginies have many creation and dreamtime stories about.
However, Uluru has got to be my favourite. It is awesome, stunning and you just can't take your eyes off it. Like Kata Juta it appears from nowhere in an otherwise barren landscape and 'sits' there like a mighty power.
Arriving for breakfast at sunrise we were treated to all of the colour changes which occur quite quickly and sometimes quite hard to see with the naked eye, its best to take pictures at regular intervals as the results on a digital camera are quite stunning. When the sun finally rises and Uluru turns a bright orange it's an amazing sight and you know you are in Australia!
Unbelievably as it sounds I did the walk around Uluru which is 2 1/2 hours long. Not as easy as it sounds when you are being attacked by flies and mosquitos and the sun is bearing down on you. Well worth it though. The climb was open but it was way too steep to me, people really do look like ants climbing it. Also, the Aboriginal people prefer you not to climb it so I didn't want to for that reason also (although the fact that it's so steep that you have to come down on your arse also factored in my decision).
We came back to Uluru at sunset and watched the colours change again with champagne and nibbles. Just beautiful and nature at its incredible, powerful best.
