We had 2 options to get to Cusco from Puno.
a) Take a comfy 5 hour bus journey.
b) Take a tedious 10 hour train journey.
We still like to seem adventurous so we took option B. The train left at 8am and arrived at 6pm. It travelled a whopping 300miles, thats a rate of 30mph. What a fun ride this was going to be!
The night before we thought wed better prepare and buy food. Unfortunately all we could find was pringles, kit kats and peanuts. We got on the train and were given a menu and hoped it would be cheap. Shock, horror - sandwiches were atleast $10. So we spent the day nibbling on our rationed Pringles. Whilst all around us 3 course dinners were served.
Scenery wasn't as good as we thought but we did see some funny things. I saw one little girl with 10 piglets, which looked like they had just been born. We also passed through towns where we were inches away from street stalls.
At one point we slowed right down and the local people started running alongside the train trying to sell the ugliest looking llama models. We thought - who would buy them? But the rich Americans loved it and started throwing money out the windows.
We stopped for a scenic break at the border of Puno/Cusco. All the Americans got off and ran to the market - where they started buying Lllama jumpers in their millions. "Oh My God, that llama jumper is gorgeous, I just have to have it". Aidan and I admired the scenery.
Got to Cusco at 6pm and whilst the other tourists were panicking they'd lost their tour guide, we jumped into a taxi and went straight to our hotel. Our hotel is great, built on Inca foundations with an amazing view of Cusco city.
We had a little wander after dinner and came across a huge concert in the Plaza with hundreds of local teenagers bopping along. Its the Inti Ramyi festival on Saturday and this is their build up to it.
