Hello again, really quick one from our cosy hostels internet in Montevideo, Uruguay.
Only arrived today after an overnight bus from Buenos Aires, but after a whole day wandering around this sleepy city we have decided to move onto Punta del Diablo, which is a sleepy surfer village on the coast of Uruguay for some non-city time.
Montevideo on a Sunday resembles a city that is under a military curfew or something similar. Em and I could easily meander our way across the main street in Uruguay with out concern of cars or buses whipping us out. In truth we suspect that most of the Montevidians were at the big soccor match between the two Montevideo teams who are finishing of a close season with what we call a 'local derby' in Australia.
Montevideo wasn't too quiet to stop Em and I from finding another Parilla (or Grill) to feast on a steak for lunch/dinner. The restaurant we stumbled into blew the budget a bit but we (especially me) were tired and there wasn't much open.
Tomorrow we are going to wander the Ciudad Vieja, or 'old city', after another hearty hostel breakfast of bread, marmalade, tea and coffee (there is also the bizarre dolce de leche, which is condensed milk caramel stuff, sickly sweet and gross, but South Americans love the stuff). Think we will see the stadium where the Socceroos defeated Uruguay to make the World Cup in 2006, other than a bit of Uruguay history reading, then catch the bus to Punta del Diablo.
In our journeys today through the quiet city streets we meandered into another crazy market that wound its way through street after street. It turned corners and crossed intersections and had a higher concentration of crap that I would never want to buy than I'd ever seen in all my travels (including Shepparton).
Alex and Em
P.S. This photo is from Buenos Aires not Montevideo, just don't have any on the comp yet for Uruguay
