We sat in our upper room, a somber oasis from the reality of the chaos of the city outside. Even in the land where Jesus walked, where He preached, and where He healed many, there are few who heed His words. “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him. He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine but the Father’s who sent Me" (John‬ ‭14:23-24‬). Christ commanded His disciples, future and present, to wash one another's feet in order to learn how to love and to serve one another as He served. He commanded that unleavened bread be eaten, symbolizing His own body, broken for our healing, and also the unity that comes from all partaking of the same body. He commanded they drink the wine that symbolizes His shed blood for the washing away of sins so all who believe may draw close to His Father and one day partake of eternal life. We washed, we ate, we drank, we read the words that were spoken and written for our very ears and eyes. It was somber for a moment, but now we rejoice. “You have heard Me say to you, ‘I am going away and coming back to you.’ If you loved Me, you would rejoice because I said, ‘I am going to the Father,’ for My Father is greater than I (John‬ ‭14:28‬). “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world (‭‭John‬ ‭16:33‬).””
