I found out later that the area I'd picked to stay in in Nagasaki wasn't a great one and in comparison to the rest of what I'd seen in Japan, it was pretty dingy. The bars in the area were either full of hookers, old men, or both, and it was tough to find a casual medium. I went to have dinner in a Japanese-style bar but quickly moved on to scope the area out more. I landed on a place and was invited to play darts with some locals. After out classing them a little Japanese lad showed up and dominated the session! I faded into the background and went over to the bar where I was handed a mic and told to start the evenings karaoke. I was surprised to find some old Coral classics on the menu, so went for those and secured a position in the rotation of the mic, though maybe not for the right reasons...
I went over to the Atomic Bomb Museum and Peace Park the next day, which didn't have the same effect on me as the Hiroshima one - though some of the sting may have been taken away as the museum was rush-hour-on-the-tube packed with loads of Japanese kids on schools trips, rocking their colour-coded hats. Also this museum focuses a lot more on the history and politics as oppose to the victims stories. I went up Mount Inasa later and caught a glimpse of the best night view in Japan and went back into downtown to meet a guy from the hostel. We grabbed a bite of conveyer belt sushi and checked out a Japanese bar. We met this Scottish guy who designed the hair of Ted in the movie and had loads of funny stories from his time in the industry. We strolled through a string of bars and ended up cracking out more karaoke to round off the time in Nagasaki!
