I stayed at 3 different capsule hotels in Tokyo, the first of which had been about for decades and made no attempt to keep with the times - the reason I chose it. I reached Tokyo at 11pm ish so dropped my bags off at the capsule and roamed about. I discovered a little bar and had some whiskey with a few locals. A laptop was cracking out some reggae via youtube, so I whipped out the ace of spades and threw down some Martin Campbell - went down a storm! I played DJ for the remainder and the locals were trying to teach me some caligraphy. A guy came round the next morning waking me and all the businessmen that had missed their last train home. You get kicked out of capsules every morning and have to check back in later so I figured I might as well mix them up and move to a new one.
After checking in to the new and improved capsule I got some banging conveyer belt sushi and headed over to Shibuya to see the chaos of the crossing. Though they were becoming a bit samey I went to another temple or two and then went up the 350 metre high sky tree to catch the 2nd best night view in Japan. I had the choice of either going to bed early and waking up at 2am for the tuna bidding at Tsukiji market, or going to a few bars and staying up until the market began and sticking it out in a merry manner. After persuading myself that there was only one viable option, I hit some bars, ending in a lock-in with some locals. I eventually broke out and roamed around the market, meeting some travellers who'd opted to get some sleep before the market. We weren't really blown away by the market, but then we never actually tried the sashimi. Catching a 2nd wind, I went over to meet the next couchsurf host, Tomo, who led the way to Chiba!
