Next, we set off for fair Verona's walls. We followed a blue sign directing us to Verona soon after getting on the Autostrade (freeway) and immediately were going through town, after town, after town. This time, we turned around so we could figure out what we were doing wrong. Our problem was following the city names instead of the colors (green is freeway, blue is regional through route). Once we figured that out, we got back onto the autostrade and flew to Verona, making great time. The time we gained, however, evaporated when we got to Verona and faced the near impossible task of finding accommodations. This is how our evening went:
- Arrived Verona
- Tried to use information booth but no one was there
- Drove around
- Hotel (Scary looking)
- Hotel (no four beds)
- Drove across town
- Holiday Inn (incredible room, but 145.00 Euros per night!)
- Gardenia Hotel (OK, but still 110.00 Euros per night)
- Back to center of town
- Train Station (ate at Macdonald's but no one could give us information on hotels)
- Siena Hotel (scary looking, at 110.00 per night)
- Vervande Hotel (scary looking, 110.00 per night)
- Trento Hotel (nice, but full)
- Back to Gardenia (full)
- Back to Holiday Inn (full!!!!)
Totally disheartened and driving in the dark at 10:00 p.m., we began looking for the Best Western hotel (what we thought was our last hope), when suddenly we saw a heavenly sign for an International Youth Hostel!! We couldn't believe it. We wound our way around tiny alleys until suddenly, there we were. Barry went in and they had a family room available in this gorgeous villa, donated by a family of Verona. Ahhhh...
