After croissants and cappuccinos, we left for the Amalfi Coast for a daytime excursion. We'd heard a lot about this famous drive, both positive and negative (traffic!!!), so we decided we needed to experience it for ourselves. We looked forward to the adventure, and adventure is what we got! First adventure:Getting out of Pompei. We'd discovered that the further south we headed into Italy, the more speed limits, stop signs and lane lines were simply a suggestion and nothing more. Trying to leave Pompei was a nightmare but to Barry's credit, he did not get honked at once, a testament to his driving skill. Once out of the city, Margaret immediately navigated us straight to Salerno. The wrong city. We'd wanted to start at Sorrento so that all of the views would be out of the passenger window, but we did the drive backwards and it was fine. Something like the Amalfi Coast could be driven upside down and it would still be brilliant. The coastline is remarkable - staggering cliffs with towns clinging precariously to them. The roads wind around suicidal hairpin corners, reminiscent of our Scottish Highland drives, minus the sheep and passing places as well as lacking any of the hesitancy we found in Scotland. Instead, scooters and motorcycles pass on both sides and the occasional van will suddenly veer out and pass several people in a fit of madness. Mirrors at each curve and a higher pitched honk are the only warnings of the tour buses approaching. We were very lucky, having only to really stop four times on the entire journey; once, to swim, once for lunch, and twice when two tour buses came face to face on a curve. We know people who take great pride in backing 60 ft trailers into tight campsites but they haven't got anything on these drivers. We swam at a stop along the coast and then lunched in Positano. Our day along the Amalfi Coast was amazing, but this is the kind of place where a person could explore for a long time. We enjoyed it very much and would definitely go again. The drive home to the hostel was good because we only got a little lost which put us right beside the ruins, so tomorrow morning, it will be easy to find our way. The evening ended with some work on updating the blog, a card game, the kids playing hide-and-seek in the beautiful garden here, and the sad thought that we are leaving Italy tomorrow.
