We managed to get up early and headed for Vatican City. We were excited about seeing this place and it certainly didn't leave us disappointed. When we arrived, we were a little anxious about the very long line-up (we thought it was for tickets, but it was for security). Luckily it went fast (only 20 minutes). The layout of the Vatican Museum was very efficient and we flowed along, enjoying the art of Raphael, Bernini and, of course, Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel. Afterwards, we sent Margaret's mom a postcard using Vatican Post and then headed to St. Peter's Basilica. Even though it was very hot, we made sure not to wear shorts, short skirts or tank tops, so we wouldn't have any problems getting in (for respect, people can't show bare shoulders or knees). At the Vatican museum, we were a bit disappointed at the number of people wearing "inappropriate clothing", but when we got to St. Peter's, we were glad we'd listened to the advice of fellow travellers as many, many people were turned away.
Again, we siesta-ed (if that is a word), and in the evening we enjoyed walks through Campo de Fiori and the Piazza Navona. On the way home, our bus stopped in the middle of nowhere and the driver announced, "Finished." We got out, the other tourists arguing with the driver, as he simply repeated, "Finished." Eventually, we found another bus and went home, but we never actually found out what that was all about.
