Margaret started her second Journal today (her colleagues gave her a writing journal as a "happy travels" gift), and enjoyed her time, sitting on the Italian Riviera. There were fewer people sitting there this afternoon than there had been in the morning. That was because a few clouds came out and people started packing up. Apparently, they didn't pay good money for 26 degree weather. They expected 35 degrees so, in disgust, they left. To our amazement, the beach vendors also went back to where they came from, only to return, having exchanged sun glasses and umbrellas for sweatshirts, belts and even winter coats! Good heavens!
We, however, stayed put and eventually, the sun came out again and so did the Italians, in full force. By 4:00 p.m. the beach was packed and Connor enjoyed several "walks" to view the topless ladies once more.
We sat at the public beach. The private beaches cost 15 Euros per family and include an umbrella, two deck chairs, a lounger and an ensured spot for the day. So why didn't we do this? You have to book in advance. We found this out after stopping at three separate private beaches and being told that they are booked up for another two weeks solid. So we went to a store, bought an umbrella and beach matt for 12 Euros and enjoyed the exact same sun and waves! Ha! Despite carefully sun screening ourselves, we all got burned in various unguarded spots. The day was relaxing and enjoyable for the most part, although very, very hot.
Our evening ended with a meal at the hostel. Each night previous, we noticed that some people came to the hostel restaurant dressed for dinner and were seated at reserved tables. It didn't take us long to figure out that the chef must be pretty good, so we decided to eat there one night. It was a great decision and we enjoyed a true Italian meal.
